What's Your Scene, Man?

![]() I moved to NYC in 1994 to go to grad school.
Back then, I didn't know I wanted from life. I just knew what I wanted right then: I wanted to be with other artists.
At NYU's Tisch School, I was part of a scene, I guess — a thoughtful, creative, courageous community that helped each other make things and think hard things through.
Now squarely in my mid-fifties (turned 55 yesterday!) I still thrive in a community of other creators who want to support each other's growth.
I've created several of my own communities over the years to do just that, and I still create forums for artists to share information with each other in my coaching programs and summits.
If you’re an artist, creator, or soulful human who wants to grow, you’ll want to find—or create—a scene that feels alive for you.
First name / So, ask yourself: ✨ Who are the people you admire? ✨ Who are the people who’ve admired your work in the past? ✨ What energy or resources can you offer others?
These questions matter if you want to create opportunities that align with what matters most to you now.
We can't constantly be cold-calling for grants, shows, interviews, gigs, favors or connections.
We have to be showing up with and for each other on the regular!
It's sometimes awkward and weird, and often really fun.
This week I'll have showed up for new and old friends.
At a book tour/signing, a gallery opening, and an off-broadway debut.
Big week.
I'm committed to showing up to rooms that excite me the way graduate school did back then.
Of course we can't know exactly what our future will look like.
But we can build the bridge we want to travel to get there.
So… what’s the community do you want to mingle with these days?
Can you show up for it? Or do you need to create it yourself?
