Power of Numbers

Updated: Mar 18

Even I can do the math.

This, coming from a woman who once fainted during cash šŸ¤‘ register training at a retail job interview in college.Ā

I've made enough spreadsheets since then to (mostly) work through the belief that I'm not enough.Ā

Math ranked high on the list of things I thought I ought not be good at.Ā

Here's the thing, though.Ā

All evidence—and I mean ALL evidence—pointed to the truth that I was just fine with numbers.Ā

(šŸ“£ BRAG: I was the only girl who got a perfect score on the NYS Regents exam in ninth grade, and I met my college math requirement with one entrance exam.)Ā

But somewhere between my body and that cash register, a threat was present.Ā

I hadn't fainted before that moment and haven’t since. But I still reserve the right not to do math under pressure—just in case.Ā

What I’m getting at here is this:

We believe a lot of things that have ENORMOUSLY POWERFUL and UNCONSCIOUS fears attached to them.Ā

And all of that aliveness is woven into the deep tissue of our bodies.Ā

We can think our way out of some things and test our way out of others, but we can't fool our bodies.Ā

If, like me, you one day flat-out faint—or the equivalent—know that your body is protecting you from an old threat.Ā

Your body is saying:

HELL NO, I WON’T GO.Ā šŸ™…šŸ¾ TOO UNSAFE.Ā

This is a numbers game, ladies.

Until we shine a light on the beliefs that fuel our deep-tissue fears, we won't grow into our greatness.Ā

SO WHAT DOES SAFE-ENOUGH LOOK LIKE?Ā

In my case, it means not doing math under pressure and giving myself enough time to prepare for number-related tasks.Ā

Ask yourself:

What would I need to feel safe enough to submit my work to that journal, apply for that residency, make that call, or ask for help?Ā

What helps me? More numbers.Ā

Bring a few other women into the equation.Ā

In all of my programs, as well as with my 1:1 clients, we engage in a group process.Ā

It’s a revelation to do this work alongside others.Ā

In this way, your growth is a numbers game.

  1. Find the safe-enough next step.

  2. Get with other women doing this work.

  3. Release old beliefs and make new choices with less fear.

Let numbers work in your favor.

In the past two weeks, with just four group sessions and lots of texting in between, the women in my current course have gotten into the deep tissues of their unconscious beliefs.

They have begun to soften to their fears and take small steps into their enough-ness.

What is your safe-enough next step?
