I wait all year to stuff my face with miniature Snickersš« bars.
Ā
And by golly, I did it!
Ā
I spent $75 on premium minisāfor the children, of courseāand sat on the stoop to indulge my long-awaited sugar binge.š
Ā
The next morning, deep in a candy hangover, I got invited to a screening of the new documentary America Is Burning by David Zmick.
Ā
Some might argue itās not the best post-Halloween hangover activityābut I went anyway.
Ā
It sobered me up pretty quick.
The film gives a grim prognosis for our future as a country.
Ā
But then it also asked something of us.
Ā
When we arenāt in alignment with our valuesāwhether because of internal doubt or external pressureāwe suffer.
That suffering can turn to blame, to resentment, to hate.
Ā
When our world burnsāas mine did when my husband diedāthereās a window of possibility.
A time to take risks we hadnāt dared to take before.
Ā
The chaos weāre ināpolitical, moral, environmental, economic, humanitarianāposes that same kind of opportunity.
Ā
When the world shakes around us, our own foundations crack too.
Ā
Maybe this is the moment that will finally catalyze our courageāto choose vulnerability and connection over resistance and disconnection.
Threats will persist.
But artistsāartists are changemakers.
We have the capacity to wonder in the midst of crisis.
To ask: What if? š¤
