Soap Box

I had a vision last week that I'd build a soap box to stand on and practice speaking.

A soap box like the Little Rascals 🐶 used at their club meetings and as little box cars.

I imagined bringing my soap box around the village, parking myself at various corners, climbing up, and trying something new.

I’d had enough of my old story.

And maybe – just maybe – If I take my soap box on the road, I’ll prove to my scared parts once and for all that I won’t die for trying.

I am not alone in my soap box vision. 🔨

📣Just yesterday, a client held an imaginary sign over her head to demonstrate what it will feel like when she fully believes her book is amazing.

Then she shifted from left to right pretending to stop cars with this sign like you'd do as a student working for her high school carwash.

In that posture my client believes that her book a) Needs to be in the world; and b) That it deserves to be seen.

I watched her shift before my eyes.

At the beginning of our call, she seemed numb—overwhelmed by the idea of diving back into her manuscript.

But when she realigned with her vision—and why it mattered—imagining getting on a soap box and stopping traffic actually felt... fun. 🤩

Gone was the fear of being judged and rejected.

In its place?

A new belief. A wave of energy. Way more excitement than fear.

That is the work.

And it has to happen every day.

I’m a resource for my client.

She has others supports too, and she'll need a few new ones for this final revision.

Creating art is an imperative for many of us.

And it should fill us with aliveness, more often than with despair.

But we can’t do it all alone.

At least—I’ve never seen it done that way.
