When Iām relaxed, Iām can make people laugh. My boyfriend and I have pee-your-pants laughing jags on the regular.Ā Ā
But when I started speaking to larger audiences, I knew I'd have to practice being "my relaxed self" in a new context.Ā
You've had the experience, oneĀ minute youāre talking to a colleagueĀ about a new idea youāre excited about. Then, as you plan to presentĀ it to buyersĀ or gallery, or an auditorium of people ā your joy and confidenceĀ buries its head inĀ the ground.Ā
Context is everything.Ā
And as a coach,Ā Ā especially as one who asks people to do brave, uncomfortable things,Ā Ā I know how important it is to create a context where you canĀ just be.Ā
A space that doesnāt instantly trigger theĀ thoughts:I donāt have the money.I donāt have the time.Iām not ready / talented / worthy enough.Ā
Believe me, I get it.Ā
I try too hard. I worry about things I canāt control.I overthink like a champ.Ā šTo soften my fear of bombing on stage, I had to turn toward it.Ā
What better way to do that than to joinĀ an improvisation class?!š
In the weeks leading up to the improv showcase on Saturday, I spiraled more than once into the belief that:
āIf I fail in front of people, itāll be proof that Iām not ever, ever, ever, ever meant to stand out... in anything... ever again.āĀ
Not funny.Ā
But hereās the thing:Ā I had fun.Ā
Whether or not people laughed,Ā I really had fun.We were all funny together ā and not because we were trying hard.Ā
We were funny because our energy was full of care and play, openness and curiosity.Because fear ā in the presence of our playful energy ā grew smaller.Ā
And when I stopped trying to be good, or impressive, or in control,Ā I could actually be present.Ā
It reminded me (again) that what we often need isnāt more of anything we think we lack.Ā
We just need to create a new context.Ā
One that invites us back into trust, play, and choice.Ā
What is the context you are creating from today?Ā
Ā If it's not fun at all, if it's not getting you the outcome you desire,Ā celebrate that awareness!Ā Ā

Now you can do the work to get backĀ to play and curiosity and on the path of getting the outcomes you truly desire.
